We Steal Freedom
Trivializing freedom of speech.
Consider “The Kevin-Julian Hour.”
What is the difference between dumping potential evidence of criminal acts into the public sphere by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy or by Julian Assange?
If one is counting edifying our enemy and known suppressor of democracy, Russia… not much.
Russia’s gain is America’s loss. That’s how “intelligence” works, unless freedom of speech gets trivialized in the process, then protection of privacy and gathering of evidence is aborted.
Autocracy wins.
Consider this difference.
In the documentary “We Steal Secrets,” (1) witnesses attest to Assange’s repeated calls to the State Department to act as recipient of classified information about civilian casualties in the Iraqi War given to him by Chelsea Manning. Regarding his foiled attempt to use appropriate channels he released this information to a community of investigative journalists committed to protecting sources.
McCarthy’s stewardship of January 6 Capitol security camera footage was forfeited by a brokered deal with Republican Party interests to leverage this footage for political gain and suppression of potential evidence of insurrection. Demanding that McCarthy siphon access to these Capitol camera videos exclusively to Tucker Carlson, conspiracy hawker and Russian media wunderkind, adds clarity to their treachery.
It’s all treason, and it’s all freedom of speech.
Or is it?
Perhaps we’ll never find out. Does this make America feel freer?
