Beware the Inauguration stupor.

December 11

Less than forty days until inauguration and I am reminded not by what President 45 said on Inauguration Day, 2017. I am reminded of crowd size. Not because there was a story, but because inauguration attendance crowd size formed the impetus for the first lie in 45’s repertoire as President.

Barely fifteen minutes into his term, and 45 delivers the first lie. The final tally of lies delivered ‘while in office’ would surpass 30,000. (1).

January 20, 2017, was not only a lie about a number, but a test of loyalty. Kellyann Conway’s spins and Sean Spicer’s dissembling didn’t alter the script.

A lot has changed in America’s story since 2017. To refresh our collective memory, recall,

when who’s misreporting collective witness is more important than the witnessing;

when a lie goes unchallenged out of the urge for more access to power and influence;

when redemption is confused with vengeance;

when insubordination is confused with duty to one’s country and people;

when ignorance and denial are preferred to recognition and acknowledgement.
