The Conversion
In which our narrator finds himself on the eve of Election Day, 2024, pondering what brought him to this place.
Did I say I voted ‘Republican’ for some of my voting life?
Nixon I. Bush I. McCain.
In ’72, I voted for McGovern. I went door to door for McGovern. Nixon was a thief and wanted to keep the war going on. I got interested in politics and why people vote the way they do.
I guess I needed company.
So here we are, one day before Election Day and I am curious to find out where my friend Norm is coming from. I figure he has not voted yet. Neither have I. I know that Norm has told me he voted for Biden in 2020, Trump in 2016 (“I hated Hillary”). I also know Norm preferred JB Pritzker to Kamala Harris as Democrat candidate for President (“I am going with the local boy”).
That’s pretty much all I knew. So, why, you ask, am I curious? I don’t know exactly, but I think it has to do with whether Norm will vote for a woman candidate. And a woman of color. I doubt he will share his preference with me. Maybe he will. Unlike Norm, I do not air my political leanings, because it’s not good for conviviality. Frankly speaking, not good for companionship. I excuse this behavior, seeking the cover of retired businessman.
