President Biden and his Corvette, 2022. When asked by a reporter January 12 where the classified documents were discovered at his Wilmington, Del. home, Biden replied, ‘yes, where I keep my Corvette in the garage…always locked.’ Photo image courtesy Time.

Classified documents found at Biden’s home and office.

Another ‘Comey Moment’ or ‘this is what obstruction looks like?’

America once again finds its public reckoning of political malfeasance in the hands of a Special Counsel. Consider 2 Special Counsels.

If you are Rep. George Santos, under scrutiny for multiple allegations of election financing fraud and misrepresentation, public reckoning can be found in the voices of 142,000 duped voters.

In a bit of bad timing reminiscent of the 2020 Candidate Biden Gaff-o-meter, the ‘President-Maybe-Re-elect,’ admitted this past week to an ongoing investigation by the DOJ and the White House Counsel of papers found in his possession, some of which were marked “classified.”

Bad timing as the public eye had to crawl over the political carcass of George Santos on the way to contemplating a “what’s next?” narrative from the White House.

‘Let’s be clear — it’s a process.’

-Karine Jean-Pierre, White House Press Secretary, following the announcement by AG Merrick Garland of the appointment of Special Counsel, Robert Hur, January 12, 2023.

So too, is the 2024 Presidential Race a “process.” One campaigner is selling $99 celebrity token cards; another campaigner, yet to announce, is ducking reporters’ questions.

George Santos and company were caught.

The media, without much to latch onto — a former President and the current President, both subjects of Special Counsel investigations — delved in ‘compare and contrast’ imagery.

One could channel surf between flashing lights of the squad cars during the nighttime raid at Mar-A-Lago and the Corvette parked in the Biden driveway. Between still shots of Jack Shaw (Trump investigation) and Robert Hur (Biden investigation). Between sound bites of James Comer (House Oversight Committee Chair) and Joe Biden (The President, reading from prepared remarks).

Meanwhile, Rep. Santos was quiet. His House vote is more precious and durable than his tenure. Why the rush to sack him now? Kick him off a few committees. We need his vote.

As for President Biden, America wouldn’t be ‘here’ except for Trump’s obstruction. The discovery of classified documents at two locations used by Biden took a couple of days of voluntary cooperation from Biden lawyers. For Trump, almost eighteen months of bad faith negotiations, subpoenas, stonewalling and appeals.

And forensic ashes from Mark Meadows’ fire pit.

Trump prefers to “run out the clock.” Biden prefers expediency. Trump wants to play golf through and ‘take a mulligan.’ Biden wants to ink over the obstruction and ‘evolve.’ Trump eludes; Biden obscures.

America and justice are waiting.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, James Madison chastened his dewy-eyed colleagues that democracy required men (sic.) of virtue, who embraced decency.

Otherwise ‘democracy’ can’t survive.
