On Christmas Day, at an art theater house near us, Nosferatu will be screened.
I didn’t make this up. A nod to the zeitgeist of our times — on the day we celebrate the arrival of a savior bringing peace to the world and good will to all we screen the arrival of the Black Plague to a city near you, the work of a possessed half human, half feral, bloodthirsty perp. A friend reports the screening of Nosferatu will probably sell out the 700 seat theater.
The day this connection simmered, I reflected on the appointment of former Rep. Matt Gaetz, a latter-day Count Orlok, as Attorney General. According to his self-proclaimed mission, Mr. Gaetz will infect the FBI, the DOJ, and assorted safekeepers of the country’s justice system for the purpose of making good on Trump’s threats to prosecute his opponents.
A friend tries to soothe — Gaetz doesn’t look like he will be approved by a majority of the Senate. The Republicans don’t have the votes, she says. I remind her that rats hastened the arrival of the Count. If not Gaetz, whomever — the rats are out.
