As Republicans pursue ‘straw dogs,’ one pillar of the First Amendment is toppling.

The right of redress, (1) one of the four pillars of the First Amendment, is being abused by individuals, standing in for defending our ‘democratic institutions.’

In its present manifestation, the right of redress takes several forms. One is to investigate where and what wrongs have been committed. One is to restore through deliberation what has been “taken away,” hence a restitution of some kind for the parties who have been wronged. The right of redress is usually exercised in a court of law, through the issuance of warrants to appear for the purpose of gathering evidence that a wrong has been committed.

Usually, but not exclusively.

Tonight, MSNBC news hour host, Rachel Maddow revealed that an investigation by both federal and state authorities was ongoing in the prosecution of 2020 election violations by individuals within the Michigan Republican Party. To set up the drama of this development, Maddow replayed a tape of a Michigan State Officer who “patiently” denied access to ‘self-styled electors’ who assembled on the Capitol House grounds November 7, 2000, the day after Biden’s popular vote win in that state.
